Nutrient Deficiencies

Yara CheckIT — free app from Yara International on iOS. Photograph your crop and compare against a photographic library of nutrient deficiencies. Insects & Pests

Seek by iNaturalist — identifies insects from photos. Not pest-specific (it identifies all insects, not just crop pests) but it will get you to the right species, and then you can look up whether it's a pest for your crop.

Plantix — handles pest identification for major crops. Photograph the affected leaf and Plantix identifies both the pest and the damage pattern.

Livestock Health

ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini — upload a photo of a visible skin condition, lump, sore, or eye issue on livestock and ask "what could cause this condition on cattle?" The AI can suggest likely causes (lumpy skin disease, ringworm, foot rot, pink eye, photosensitization) based on the visual appearance. This is preliminary identification only — it helps you understand what you're looking at before the vet arrives.

Barcodes: UPC, EAN, MPN

Google Lens — point the camera at a barcode or printed part number and Google Lens reads it and searches. This works for standard UPC barcodes (12 digits, common on US retail products) and EAN barcodes (13 digits, common on imported and industrial products).

Google Search — type the UPC, EAN, or MPN directly into Google. For UPC, search the 12-digit number. For EAN, the 13-digit number. For MPN (manufacturer part number), search the alphanumeric code in quotes: "RE559485". Google usually surfaces eBay, Amazon, and OEM parts pages on the first result.

How to Take a Photo the AI Can Read

The AI is only as good as the photo. Here's how to get it right:

  1. Good lighting — shoot outside in daylight or under a shop light. Avoid shadows on the part. The AI needs to see surface details, color, and markings.

  2. Fill the frame — get close enough that the part or connector fills most of the photo. A tiny part in the middle of a big photo won't identify well. Use your phone's macro mode if it has one.

  3. Both sides — for connectors, photograph both the mating face (where you can see the pins) and the side with any printed part numbers. Two photos are better than one.

  4. Include scale — put a coin or ruler next to small parts so the AI can estimate size. A Deutsch DTM and DTP look similar in a photo without scale reference.

  5. Clean the part — wipe off grease and mud before photographing. Part numbers stamped on connectors are often invisible under grime.

  6. Flat, not angled — photograph the part straight-on for the face view, not at a 45-degree angle. The AI needs to count pins, and angles distort the pattern.
